Harvey Toub - Life Legacy

(sources : http://www.westgeorgiacrematory.com/sitemaker/sites/westge0/obit.cgi?user=255546Toub )

Harvey Toub, age 71, of Whitesburg, Georgia died Tuesday, August 28, 2010 at home from complications of prostate cancer. He was born March 25, 1939 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Samuel Toub and Lilyan Steiner. He is survived by his wife Bobbe Jacobs Toub; children Rachel O’Mara (and Peter O’Mara), Danny Toub (and Kora Smith), and Steve Toub; grandchildren Ben O’Mara, Pasha Toub, Sam O’Mara, Anna O’Mara, and Sara Toub; brother Richard Toub; and honorary grandson Zach Holsomback.

He graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1957 and Lehigh University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1961. After working on self-help community development projects as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sarawak, Malaysia, he married Maryann Zall.

He retired from his consulting mechanical engineering business in 1998 to focus on his life work: traveling the globe to engage in small-scale development projects in some of the world’s poorest villages. Many people and medical clinics in Central America, the Caribbean, and Asia have clean water and electricity, powered by solar energy, because of his contributions of money and expertise. These experiences opened him to meeting and marrying Bobbe Jacobs, who remains his life partner.

If he did not alienate you with his unique sense of humor, you grew to appreciate his iconoclastic nature. Speaking smatterings of Malay, Iban, Chinese, Spanish, and Russian—often in the same sentence—he had a zest for travel and learning about other cultures. He also had the ability to make others laugh, no matter the language. A lifelong learner, he enjoyed taking classes at Georgia State University and the University of West Georgia. He was active in the Whitesburg community for the past 5 years, particularly with the creation of the Whitesburg Public Library.

A memorial service will be held on saturday October 23, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. from McIntosh Reserve Park. Eventually, his ashes will be placed in the Batang Lupar River in Sarawak, Malaysia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harvey Toub Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation of West Georgia, 807 South Park Street, Carrollton, GA 30117; all contributions will be donated to the Friends of the Whitesburg Public Library Fund. No flowers or gifts, please.
